How Long Does a Fracture Take to Heal? By Dr. Kashyap Solanki – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Andheri East, Mumbai

Bone fractures are among the most common injuries treated in orthopaedic clinics. Whether it’s a wrist fracture from a fall or a leg fracture from an accident, the first question most patients ask is:

“Doctor, how long will it take to heal?”

General Healing Time for Fractures

  • Children: 3 to 6 weeks

  • Adults: 6 to 12 weeks

  • Elderly or osteoporotic bones: 12 weeks or more

Healing time varies based on age, type of fracture, bone involved, and overall health.

Factors That Affect Fracture Healing

  1. Type of Fracture

    • Simple (closed) fractures heal faster than complex or comminuted ones.

  2. Bone Involved

    • Fingers or ribs may heal within weeks, while femur or tibia fractures take longer.

  3. Treatment Method

    • Operated fractures (with plates/screws) may need more healing time than casted ones.

  4. Patient Health

    • Smokers, diabetics, and those with poor nutrition may experience delayed healing.

  5. Compliance with Immobilization & Rehab

    • Early movement or weight-bearing can delay healing or cause nonunion.

Phases of Bone Healing

  1. Inflammatory Phase (1–7 days): Swelling, pain, and bleeding at the fracture site.

  2. Repair Phase (1–4 weeks): New bone (callus) starts forming.

  3. Remodeling Phase (6 weeks – months): Bone reshapes and strengthens.

Three bone illustrations show healing phases: Inflammatory (red area), Repair (red band), Remodeling (intact bone). Text labels phases.

What Can You Do to Heal Faster?

  • Follow your orthopaedic surgeon’s advice strictly

  • Avoid putting weight on the affected limb early

  • Eat a high-protein, calcium- and Vitamin D-rich diet

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol

  • Attend all follow-up X-rays to track healing

When to Worry About Delayed Healing

  • Persistent pain/swelling after 8–10 weeks

  • No visible callus on X-ray

  • Implant loosening or infection signs

  • Weakness or instability in the healed area

In such cases, you may require further evaluation, bone grafting, or revision surgery.
