Why Your Knees Hurt When Climbing Stairs – Expert Advice by Dr. Kashyap Solanki – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Andheri East, Mumbai

Why Do My Knees Hurt When I Climb Stairs?

Climbing stairs puts a lot more pressure on your knees than walking on flat ground — nearly 3 to 4 times your body weight. If you're experiencing pain specifically when going up or down stairs, it could be a sign of an underlying knee condition that needs attention.

Common Causes of Knee Pain While Using Stairs

1. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner’s Knee)

Also known as "anterior knee pain," this condition occurs when the kneecap (patella) doesn't glide smoothly over the thigh bone. It’s common in both active individuals and office-goers with weak thigh muscles.

2. Osteoarthritis of the Knee

With age or wear-and-tear, the cartilage in your knee wears down. Climbing stairs becomes painful because the joint space narrows, and bones start rubbing together.

3. Chondromalacia Patella

This refers to softening or damage of the cartilage under the kneecap, causing pain especially when climbing stairs or getting up from a chair.

4. Meniscus Injury

A torn meniscus (cartilage cushion in your knee) can cause pain, locking, or a catching sensation — often felt more while bending the knee during stair climbing.

5. Quadriceps or Hamstring Muscle Weakness

Weak thigh muscles fail to support the knee joint properly, increasing the stress on the joint during stair movement.

Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

  • Pain around or behind the kneecap

  • Clicking or popping sound in the knee

  • Swelling after climbing stairs

  • Difficulty in bending or straightening the knee

  • Pain that worsens after prolonged sitting

Simple Tips to Reduce Pain

  • 🔹 Avoid stairs temporarily if pain is severe

  • 🔹 Use a handrail for support while climbing

  • 🔹 Strengthen your thigh muscles (under medical supervision)

  • 🔹 Apply ice after activity to reduce inflammation

  • 🔹 Maintain a healthy body weight

When Should You See a Doctor?

If the pain persists for more than a few days or interferes with daily activities, it’s best to consult an orthopaedic specialist. Early diagnosis can prevent long-term damage and chronic pain. About Dr. Kashyap Solanki
